March 1941. Italy’s imperial ambitions have all but crumbled to dust – its troops in Greece and Libya have been routed, its navy has suffered humiliating defeats at Taranto and Cape Matapan, and its colonies in East Africa are on the verge of capitulation. In the Mediterranean theatre of war, the Allies have managed to maintain the initiative for now.
Germany has big plans for 1941 and has no intention of being distracted by the Mediterranean, but Italy’s failures are not playing into the Reich’s hands either. The Wehrmacht wants to quickly conquer Greece and at the same time strengthen the Italian defences in Libya with a small mechanized group.
This is the Afrika Korps, commanded by General Erwin Rommel.
The Axis forces in North Africa are quite diverse: the Afrika Korps is an elite mobile unit, while the larger Italian forces in the region are not suited to mobile warfare and their command is prone to making poor decisions. Defeating the British, while many units are poorly supplied and under-prepared, will require a high level of military skill.
